Jarne Schuiling, Vries (NL)

Jarne Schuiling comes from Vries (DR) and runs a dairy farm with his parents. They have been using Silage Safe since 2021 and are especially enthusiastic about the good quality of the silage.

Good quality grass silage

“We use Silage Safe for the first and second cuts. They are the best for dairy cattle, so we don't want any losses. If it's not good, we won't feed it to the dairy cows. But actually we don't have to throw anything away. We have been using it for three to four years now and we actually have little to no losses.”

Jarne notes that they mainly gain the advantage on the shoulders: “The shoulders are almost even better on top, but on top is also just fine. I pull the sides completely tight so that there is no air left. The great thing is that we can preserve the proteins of the grass much better this way. “

No more car tires

In 2021 they saw it on Facebook and it appealed to them because of the good shoulders and little heating: “We then went to look at another farmer and we saw it was super neat and the shoulders were super tight.”

Now they are very happy that they chose Silage Safe: “It looks neater without car tires, but you also cover much tighter. You can throw car tires on it, but how heavy is a car tire actually? Sure, the plastic remains in place, but this system is much tighter so that there is no air left. Compared to other covering systems, Silage Safe is much cheaper and for other systems you often have to install a new silo for it. But, Silage Safe can be used for almost every silo.“

They have also improved in terms of labour, says Jarne: “Especially opening the silage every week is super easy, within five minutes you have two meters open. Preparing it for the first time can be a bit of a job, because you will have to check all the cloths first. But in the end the quality of the silage is the most important.”
